Why Are Electrical Safety Inspections Important?

Your wiring runs throughout your entire home. Over time, your home’s electrical wiring may degrade. It’s important to make sure every connection from your outlets, light fixtures, light switches, and electrical panel is done properly and safely to code. We have the tools and expertise to test your GFCI outlets, Grounding System, Smoke Detectors, Surge Protection, Power Consumption, Breaker Panel, Arc Fault Protection, Pool Equipment, and more. Getting periodic electrical safety inspections will help ensure the safety and efficiency of your home. Our technicians use a comprehensive electrical inspection checklist to ensure every aspect of your electrical system is safe and compliant.

It’s difficult to always know when there’s a wiring problem in your home. Until the problem grows more serious and shows obvious signs, the problem may remain hidden. Our technicians have the knowledge and experience to identify problems during a home electrical inspection. A safety inspection will help you eliminate electrical problems before they pose a safety risk to your family.

You should schedule a residential electrical inspection if it has been more than a year since your last inspection, or if you observe the following signs:

  • Frequent power failures due to blown fuses or tripped circuits
  • Flickering lights
  • Scorch marks on the walls near outlet or light switch covers
  • Burning odor near outlets or appliances

You should also request electrical inspection services anytime you change how you use energy in your home. For example, buying a new stove or adding a dishwasher may need updated wiring. It’s better to get a professional electrician’s evaluation upfront rather than risk a fire or electrical shock in your home.

Why Should You Call Us for Electrical Safety Inspections?

There are several reasons you should never undertake a residential electrical inspection by yourself. First, you won’t know what to look for to identify faults, shorts, and other electrical issues. You also won’t have the equipment needed to test the wiring throughout your home. Finally, you won’t have the safety equipment needed to protect yourself.

Our electricians are skilled and trained to work with high-voltage electrical systems. They follow an electrical inspection checklist to evaluate every aspect of your home’s system. They also have the knowledge and training needed to work safely. They know how to protect themselves and your home during every electrical inspection they perform.

What Do Electrical Safety Inspections Entail?

A home electrical inspection involves evaluating several aspects of your wiring and electrical panel. When you schedule your first inspection, you might be surprised to learn how much this entails. Here is a brief overview of a standard inspection.

Check the Circuits

The circuits in your home channel electricity to outlets and lights as needed. You should have enough circuits to handle your home’s energy demands.

Our electricians will check to ensure you have enough circuits to meet those demands. If not, your electrician will recommend updating or adding circuits to your home’s system. We will also check to make sure your home has the necessary dedicated circuits, which are circuits that are specifically intended to handle the energy needs of a single device. For example, your dryer, water heater, microwave, and HVAC system all need dedicated circuits.

Check for GFCI & AFCI Protection

Electricity and water don’t mix well. All electrical safety inspections include checking and testing outlets with GFCI protection. GFCIs protect outlets supplying electricity to any wet locations to prevent you from getting shocked. All of your outlets near sinks, showers, and outdoors should have GFCI protection.

A recently enacted requirement for residential homes is that their circuits are AFCI protected. AFCI, or arc-fault circuit interrupters, protect against sparking, which can cause electrical fires and increased risk of shocks. Any new or remodeled home is required to include AFCI-protected circuits. If you have an older home, we can still help update your home to have AFCI-protected wiring.

Provide an Electrical Panel Inspection

Electrical inspection services also include an evaluation of your home’s electrical panel. The electrician will examine the condition of the box itself and make recommendations if it has any heat damage or has become rusted or damaged.

They will also check the fuses or circuit breakers. They may recommend updating your panel with additional circuit breakers to eliminate fuses for better efficiency. Also, chlorine can cause breaker panels to corrode and not last their full expected life. Avoid storing chemicals for flammable materials near your breaker panel.

Check Your Smoke Detectors

After checking the electrical panel, we will also visually check your smoke detectors. You should have smoke detectors in every bedroom as well as any hallways leading to a bedroom. Most smoke detectors have batteries that need to be replaced yearly and should be tested as well. The NFPA recommends replacing smoke detectors themselves every 8 to 10 years. Smoke detectors are a common item we work on and stock on our service trucks to help our customers.
